Cabling - What Do I Need & Why?

It’s important to choose the right cable for specific purposes, so here’s a short guide that should help:

6241Y, 6242Y, 6242B, 6243Y cable- PVC sheathed surface wiring cables, or Twin and Earth cables. These are mostly used for domestic wiring of fixed installations such as lighting, hobs, cookers, and showers. It is a British standard BS6004 cable and can be fixed directly on to surfaces, put through a cable tray, or, in the air providing there are no dangers of damage from mechanical impact. These cables feature PVC insulation, plain annealed copper conductors, and grey PVC sheathing

6242Y

6491X cable - PVC insulated single core. It is a low voltage copper cable made to be installed inside enclosed, protected areas or as an earthing cable. The 6491X is particularly suited to wiring systems such as lighting and heating domestically, commercially, and industrially and can very easily be drawn into conduit and trunking.

6491X

6181Y cable - General purpose, low voltage PVC/PVC Cable which is mainly used for the connection to Domestic Consumer Units, Switched Fuses and light industrial wiring from the incoming mains. It should be installed in areas with low risk of mechanical damage.

6181Y

6942x / 6943x Steel wire Armoured cable for fixed installations doesn’t need trunking or conduit, It can be used in power networks, buried underground and used for indoor and outdoor applications. This must be installed according to BS7671 Wiring Regulations.

6942X

NYY-J Cabling - This is designed for fixed installation and can be used safely in areas you wouldn’t necessarily anticipate mechanical issues, whether it’s inside, outside, direct underground burial, concreted, or water submersion.
