How many lights should I put on the Christmas Tree?

Unless you have a Christmas tree with its own set of lights already attached (as in the case of some of the smaller artificial ones nowadays) you will need to choose and arrange a set of lights on the tree to make it look truly seasonal and festive.  The number of lights you require will depend on the size of the tree and the type of lights you use.  So, how many lights will you need?

As a rough rule of thumb, you should allow a minimum of 100 LEDs per foot of tree. Allow more for a fuller look. See also the following guidance which depends to some extent on the type of lights you choose.

How many lights, and which type of lights, should I put on the Christmas Tree?

STRING LIGHTS:

String Lights - for a classic look, you can use what are now known as “String Lights”.  String lights are the LED equivalent of what used to be called Fairy Lights. String lights tend to be reasonably well spread out but there is always the option to use a greater quantity to give a richer look to your tree. You might consider 400 LEDs for a small tree;  600 LEDs for a 6-foot tree; 1000 LEDs for an 8-foot tree and perhaps two strings of 600 LEDs for a 12-foot tree.

CLUSTER LIGHTS:

Cluster Lights - for a really rich look, you can use “Cluster Lights”.  Your tree will look really bright as there are many more lights per linear metre than you will get with string lights. A single pack of 2000, properly hung on your tree, should be adequate to cover a 9-foot tree; two packs will easily cover a 12-foot tree. The lights featured in the above link have the added advantage of a built-in timer, meaning that they can be set to come on at the same time each day and remain on for 8 hours.
